One and a half inches of rain earlier this week wasn’t enough for the Brazos County Commission to end a burn ban.
County Judge Duane Peters says there was a unanimous vote Tuesday to extend the prohibition of outdoor fires in rural areas another 60 days.
That followed the recommendations of volunteer fire chiefs and the county’s emergency management coordinator.
If conditions improve, Peters says a new state law gives the county judge the authority to rescind the ban immediately.

Over the last 12 months, rural landowners in Brazos County have been allowed to do outdoor burning only three weeks, which was in late January and early February.
While the ban continues in Brazos County, Grimes County commissioners on Tuesday lifted their burn ban according to the sheriff’s office Facebook page.
