Leaders of Bryan’s electric utility addressed the city council at its last meeting about recently installed remote radio-controlled electric meters.
BTU General Manager Dan Wilkerson says 48,000 smartmeters have been in operation since January.

Wilkerson was asked about customers who want meter readers instead of the remote control feature. Wilkerson says in Maine, customers who choose meter readers pay a $40 dollar set up charge and a monthly fee of $12 dollars.
Dan Wilkerson comments on increasing rates for in-person meter readers.
Customers also challenged whether smartmeters result in higher electric rates. Wilkerson says he knows of only one case since 48 thousand smartmeters went into service.
