Bryan School Board Approves Big Stipend Increases

The Bryan school board on Wednesday approved changes in the teacher stipend schedule where two positions are getting $12,000 dollar pay raises.

The stipend for band directors at Bryan and Rudder High goes from $8,000 to $10,000. And deputy superintendent Dr. Tim Rocka says both will be paid another $10,000 to ensure middle school band and orchestra students continue performing at the high school level.

Another new position approved by the board, a certified executive chef for Bryan High’s culinary arts program, will receive $5,000.

And the stipend for bilingual teachers was raised from $3,500 to $6,000, making Bryan the highest for that position in this part of the state. Dr. Rocka and the district’s director of bilingual education, Dr. Wanda Baker said too many bilingual teachers have been hired and trained, only to leave after one or two years for higher pay elsewhere.

Dr. Rocka said Bryan ISD currently has 139 bilingual teachers but more will be hired because the district takes in an additional 150 to 200 students a year.
