A 25 year member of the Bryan police department is now an assistant chief.
BPD announced on its Facebook page, the promotion of Walt Melnyk as assistant chief of the department’s investigative services bureau.
This fills a vacancy that was created in June after Dean Swartzlander was promoted to chief.
Melnyk, who joined BPD in 1999, was promoted to sergeant in 2006 and lieutenant in 2019.
His prior positions included being a patrol officer, the department’s public information officer and crime prevention officer, and a supervisor in patrol, directed deployment team, the property crimes unit, professional standards, training and recruiting, BPD’s academy, and criminal investigation division.
