An incident with a combative suspect left a Bryan police officer with minor injuries.

A resident near the intersection of Lakewood and Northside called police about 8 p.m., Thursday, saying Gary Len Caldwell, Jr. was loitering in their yard.

When an officer arrived, Caldwell, 27, allegedly hit him the head and fled the scene. The officer caught up with Caldwell and arrested him after a struggle.

Caldwell is charged with assault on a public servant, evading detention, and resisting arrest.

Both Caldwell and the officer were treated at St. Joseph Regional Health Center for minor injuries. Why Caldwell chose to fight the officer in the first place is not known.
