Bryan New Directions PAC Seeks Federal And State Assistance After Its Petition Campaign Is Rejected By The City Council

A Bryan political action committee is asking the U.S. Justice Department and the Texas Secretary of State’s office to allow Bryan voters to consider ten proposed changes to the city charter.

Mike Southerland of the Bryan New Directions PAC disagrees with the city secretary, who determined 216 people who signed petitions were not registered voters.

Southerland, who is also on the city council, was the lone vote against accepting the city secretary’s decision during a special council meeting on Monday.

Mayor Andrew Nelson says he’s not surprised that Southerland is contacting federal and state officials.

The council majority agreed with the city secretary’s certification, that the PAC was 355 signatures shy of the minimum.
