For the second time, a Bryan man is going to prison for shooting people.

It’s also the second time that 43 year old Nathaniel Banks Jr. and the Brazos County district attorney’s office reach a plea agreement.

On Monday (April 14), Banks admitted to a September 2021 shooting where the victim went to Facebook Live after he was shot multiple times and identified Banks.

Banks was sentenced to 40 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a gun by a felon.

He previously served a 20 year sentence for attempted murder for a shooting in 1999, just before Banks turned 18. That plea agreement followed a trial that ended in a hung jury.

News release from the Brazos County district attorney’s office:

On April 14, 2025, Nathaniel Banks Jr. pled guilty to Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Pursuant to a plea agreement, Judge Kyle Hawthorne sentenced the defendant to 40 years in prison.

On September 25, 2021, officers with the Bryan Police Department responded to a 911 call from a concerned civilian who was awakened to the sound of gunfire. Upon arrival at 2293 North Earl Rudder, officers discovered the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. After he was shot, the victim got on Facebook Live to identify the defendant as the shooter. He was later transported to the hospital for surgery. Another civilian, who was with the victim at the time of the shooting, also identified the defendant as the shooter. After recovering from surgery, the victim identified the defendant as the shooter. He said they knew each other and had been together that night at a club.

The defendant was detained a street over from the shooting. A CSPD K-9 unit tracked from the shooting to where the defendant was detained. Along that path, officers found a handgun magazine. A later search of that area led to the recovery of the handgun used in the shooting, which was confirmed by DPS linking the fired rounds and shell casings to the gun.

In 2001 the defendant was convicted of Attempted Murder and pled to 20 years in prison. While in prison in Amarillo, the defendant was in possession of multiple cell phones and sentenced to an additional 2 years in prison.

Statement from assistant district attorneys Brian Price, Tonika Davis, and Abigail Goodman: “This defendant is a repeat, violent offender. The only way to protect this community is to separate him from other citizens and access to firearms. Four decades in prison should help to accomplish that goal.”
