A Bryan man who reported he was robbed and cut earlier this week has been arrested for making a false report.

49 year old Bert Robinson reported Tuesday afternoon there was a disturbance with a knife at his home on Hoppess Street, near 29th and Coulter.

According to Bryan police officer Kelley McKethan, Robinson said he made up the story because he was covering up to his wife he had paid off debts to some people instead of paying household bills.

McKethan says officers questioned the legitimacy of Robinson’s report “from the get go…something was off”, but that did not stop a thorough investigation.

McKethan says when Robinson was shown a photo lineup of people matching the suspect’s description, investigators asked Robinson to demonstrate how he was cut by a knife. After detectives determined his injuries were not consistent with the wounds he had, Robinson confessed to making up the story.

McKethan says Tuesday’s response to the reported assault and robbery brought out 15 to 20 officers. A couple of people were stopped and questioned who matched the suspect description and neighborhood schools were contacted as a precaution.

Robinson, who was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor cuts that were self-inflicted, was arrested Friday morning and taken to the Brazos County Jail. Bond was set at $4,000 dollars.
