Bryan school board members on Monday approved giving employees a holiday bonus.

Superintendent Christie Whitbeck says it’s a one time thank you for going above and beyond during the pandemic.

Salaried employees will receive $500 dollars and hourly workers $250 dollars.

The more than $1 million dollar expense will come from either reimbursements from pandemic expenses and/or BISD’s savings account. The bonus will be added to BISD employee December 15th paychecks.

For the third time, the Bryan ISD school board will be looking for a site to build a new transportation and maintenance complex. That’s after the board unanimously voted on Monday to terminate a contract for land on Marino Road between Highway 21 and FM 974. At the time of the vote, no reason was given for pulling out…or what this does to the timetable to build the $30 million dollar facility and the $55 million dollar intermediate school on the site of the current transportation complex. A BISD spokesman told WTAW News “After doing our due diligence during the option period of the contract we determined the property was not conducive for the type of facility we’d like to build.”

In other business during Monday’s BISD board meeting, there was unanimous support to president Mark McCall’s recommendation to fill a vacancy by taking applications. McCall said that was after he found no interest from members of BISD committees. The single member district five position that covers the west side of the district has been vacant since Doug Wunneburger left in September. The BISD administration office will be accepting resumes from interested applicants.
