A reminder for parents of 6-12th grade students: April 5 is the deadline to request a school transfer for a special program. District policy allows students to transfer to another school outside of their attendance zone for program purposes only.

Certain programs are located only on a particular campus, such as swimming and wrestling at Bryan High School or gymnastics at Rudder High School. Academic and career tech programs such as International Baccalaureate, auto mechanics, cosmetology are at BHS, while the Culinary Academy is at Rudder.

This also includes the middle school academies: the Odyssey Academy at SFA and the INQUIRE Academy at Jane Long.

Transfer request forms available at the Library Processing Center

Sandy’s show prep notes:

We have a busy spring semester underway. Middle school orientation meetings will be held over the next two weeks. We have already been meeting with 5th grade parents in the elementary schools to help them get ready to transition their students into middle school. Each middle school will hold a parent orientation meeting to share information about courses, electives, and the registration process.

We produced a DVD about the transition to middle school. It is available for viewing on our website (http://www.bryanisd.org/default.asp?pageID=204), and is hosted by a very talented 8th grader, Abby Kurwitz.

The parent orientation dates are posted on our website and Facebook pages. www.bryanisd.org & www.facebook.com/BryanISD

Next Saturday, Feb. 27 is an event co-sponsored by the Rudder High School Rangerettes and the Hammond-Oliver Health Occupations of America students.

Sandy’s prep notes:

New graduation requirements take effect this fall.

What has changed?

Technology credit is no longer required. Health credit is no longer required. The requirement for PE credits has been reduced to 1.0 credit (instead of 1.5).

What if students have already taken these courses?

These courses count for elective credit (students will now need 6 elective credits). In our increasingly technology-based world, having computer skills is valuable for students who will one day enter the workforce. Developing the skills to speak in front of a group is also important in many fields; students can benefit from taking speech (and even debate) in high school. The topics covered in health classes are also important in order to help students grow into healthy adults.

Is a schedule change necessary?

No. These courses will count as elective credits. However, students are welcome to request a schedule change if other courses better serve their interests. The 2009-2010 Course Guide is available online. Keep in mind that we cannot guarantee a seat in other courses since the master schedule has been set. The deadline for making schedule changes is Friday, August 21.

School starts August 24. Schedule pickup will begin in mid-August for Bryan High and Rudder, and other schools will be having meet the teacher nights as Aug. 24 draws closer. Those dates will be available on our website, Twitter and Facebook pages.

We have three high school art students who have painted violins for a project benefitting the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. Pictures of the violins can be seen on the web at http://www.violinsforthevalley.com/raffle.html

Raffle tickets can be purchased for the violins and all information is on that website.

BHS & Rudder FFA awards from the state convention.
