Four years after the grass turf at Merrill Green stadium was replaced with an artificial surface, it has been removed. Bryan superintendent Tommy Wallis went to his Twitter account Wednesday night to report Astroturf took out a defective turf and is installing a better quality replacement at no charge to the district. The new turf will be ready before the start of football season. And small portions of the old turf will be used around the district.
Meantime, the Bryan school board has awarded construction contracts for additions and renovations at four more elementary campuses approved by voters in November 2014.
Construction services director Jeff Windsor says two local companies were beat out by a Waco company, Built-Wright, for the work at Henderson, Jones, and Crockett. The $9 million dollar bid was $310,000 dollars under the project estimate.
The board also accepted Windsor’s recommendation for a $3.1 million dollar bid at Johnson to Dudley Construction of College Station. That was $27,000 dollars under the project estimate.
The board was also told renovations at the performing arts center…the former civic auditorium…along with work at Bryan Collegiate and Bryan High are on schedule to open October first. And at Davila, the new weight and choir rooms are still expected to be completed in time for the start of the next school year.
