The site of a former north Bryan manufacturer is now going to be owned by the Bryan school district for growing its career and technology program.
The $5 million dollar transaction was unanimously approved Monday by the Bryan ISD school board and the city of Bryan-Brazos County economic development foundation (EDF).
The 119 acre tract on Mumford Road, which includes nearly 50,000 square feet of building space, was the former home of defense contractor BMI Defense Systems.
There are two buildings. One is a 35,000 square foot structure planned to become a manufacturing/lab/classroom facility. And a 14,456 square foot structure is planned to be used for office, research, and meeting space.
The new campus has a capacity of about 1,200 students, who would be split between morning and afternoon classes.
Career and Technology Education (CTE) director David Reynolds says students are being turned away at the present facilities at Rudder High School.
CTE is the largest program in Bryan ISD at 3,500 students.
Two members of the EDF, Bryan mayor Andrew Nelson and Brazos County judge Duane Peters, were among those applauding Bryan ISD for growing CTE programs as a way of recruiting new manufacturers to the area.
Bryan ISD is paying cash for the the property from the district’s savings account.
The complete transition to the new location from Rudder High School is expected to be finished in the fall of 2019. Some programs could move to the new site this fall.
