A Bryan Councilman’s Third Attempt In Six Months For A Sidewalk

For the third time in six months, Bryan city councilman Rafael Pena was looking for money to build a sidewalk along Sandy Point Road from Highway 21 west to Forest Park apartments.

During this week’s discussion of next year’s city budget, Pena was told there was $1.5 million million dollars from the oil and gas and/or capital reserve funds that is available.

City manager Kean Register and chief financial officer Joe Hegwood had other ideas, including a proposed superpark and a downtown railroad quiet zone.

The sidewalk, located a mile from Pena’s official residence, has a cost estimate of $500,000 dollars. It is not listed in the city’s current capital improvements plan.

The council gave first round approval of next year’s budget as proposed on a 5-1 to one vote. Mike Southerland voted no and Al Saenz was not in the room.
