Bryan Council Renames Park for Early Hispanic Leader

The Bryan City Council at Tuesday night’s meeting unanimously supported changing the name of a local park.

San Jacinto Park will be renamed Ibarra Park, honoring the Reverend Guillermo Ibarra, who founded the first Hispanic church in Bryan.  Ibarra who served as pastor of Primera Iglesia Bautista from August 1922 until his death in April 1929.

The park is the site of Ibarra Elementary School, which served children of Mexican descent from 1935 to 1949.

Members of the Brazos County Historical Commission say a state historical marker will be placed at the park.  It will be the first marker in the county honoring a resident of Hispanic descent.
