Bryan Council Rejects Intern Proposal

The idea to create a new Bryan city department, assigning Texas A&M interns to each council member, was defeated at this week’s meeting.

City attorney Janis Hampton said the proposal as written would violate the city charter and federal labor laws.

Co-sponsor Mike Southerland also referred to the city charter, saying he was looking for more help with research that he says takes 20 to 30 hours a week.

City manager Kean Register said he’ll hire more employees if necessary, and he asked Southerland to ask more specific questions in the future.

The 30 minute debate also included Chuck Konderla telling Rafael Pena he was rude to city staff. Konderla followed with an apology demanded by Pena, then Konderla told Pena he did not treat city staff with the respect they deserved.
