Bryan Council Debates Police Department

Tuesday’s Bryan city council meeting included an exchange over the performance of the police department.

In the end, the council agreed to meet with the police chief on an individual basis.

That’s after Mayor Jason Bienski challenged Mike Southerland and Rafael Pena about why they added to the agenda a request to learn how BPD would handle situations similar to what happened in Ferguson Missouri along with riots and terrorist attacks.

Southerland and Pena both said they have not lost faith in Chief Eric Buske.

They also want to know what’s being done to recruit more minority officers, the department’s discipline policy, and what’s being done to acquire body cameras…which the chief told the council they are working on a recommendation for cameras.
