Bryan Broadcasting’s vice president and general manager is returning to the board of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB).
Ben Downs has served eight years during four prior stints.
Downs, who will represent radio and television stations representing the NAB in south Texas, starts his fifth term next month.
Bryan police respond to a report of gunfire inside and outside a home near Austin’s Colony Park Sunday (November 17) at three in the morning. Seven people who were inside the home were not struck. A 17 year old occupant, Alexander Espinoza, was taken to jail on charges of firing the gun and two counts of child endangerment. The BPD arrest report stated officers had made prior visits to the home and the homeowner required a search warrant for officers to enter. Espinoza told officers he has carried a gun since being shot last August. And he fired the gun after getting in an argument with his girlfriend. As for November 18, Espinoza remained in jail in lieu of bonds totaling $65,000 dollars. College Station police respond to a report Saturday during the midnight hour (November 16) of a witness reporting a car going 100 miles per hour flip over and going down the embankment at the interchange of Raymond Stotzer and Harvey Mitchell Parkway. The CSPD arrest report says the driver and passenger both refused transport to the hospital after being checked by medics at the scene. The driver, who identified himself as a Blinn College baseball player, was arrested for DWI. The CSPD arrest report does not say if a blood or breath alcohol test was done on 20 year old Lane Bledsoe, who was released from jail after posting a $3,000 dollar bond. A crash Friday (November 15) on Mumford Road north of Bryan where a pickup towing a trailer overturned and landed in a ditch resulted in the driver’s arrest for DWI and obstructing a highway. The arrest report from the Texas Department of Public Safety says results of the driver’s breath alcohol tests were around two and a half times the legal limit at .199 and .208. 31 year old Jorge Montecinos of Hearne remained in jail as of November 18 in lieu of bonds totaling $6,000 dollars. Online jail records also shows Montecinos is being held for immigration authorities.
A woman from Hearne who received $5 million dollars from the Texas Lottery for claiming a winning scratch ticket was arrested on felony charges of obtaining the ticket through fraudulent activity and felony theft. The Robertson County jail website says 35 year old Arthurica Jackson was released after posting bonds totaling $300,000 dollars. WTAW News has e-mailed the lottery and the Hearne police chief asking if any of the $5 million has been recovered. No details have been released about a joint investigation that began two days after the lottery announced the winning ticket. A Texas Lottery spokesman told WTAW News “A Hearne resident claimed a top prize winning ticket in the Texas Lottery® scratch ticket game Luxe on Nov. 4. The $5 million top prize was paid to the claimant at the time of completing the validation process. The matter you are inquiring about is a Hearne Police Department criminal investigation in which Texas Lottery investigators are assisting. As this is an open, pending investigation and not directly under the Texas Lottery Commission’s authority, we are unable to comment further or provide any additional details about this particular ticket.”
The Bryan/College Station Salvation Army’s annual holiday campaign is underway. Friday’s program (November 15) at Blue Baker restaurant on University begins the adoption of children who will receive gifts through the Angel Tree program and the recruitment of volunteer bell ringers at Red Kettle locations. Angel Trees are located at various businesses around Bryan and College Station, including Blue Baker’s three locations. The trees will be decorated with paper angels, each representing a local child. Community members who participate are asked to drop off gifts for their Angel Tree recipient by Wednesday, December 11th. And limited-edition Angel Cookies will be available for purchase at all three Blue Baker locations from Friday, November 15th through Sunday November 17th while supplies last. Proceeds from cookie sales will directly benefit Angel Tree. Friday’s kickoff program began with Salvation Army captain Luis Villanueva introducing local barbershop quartet Tetrachord, who sang holiday songs. That was followed by a welcome and prayer from Salvation Army captain Marianne Villanueva. Speakers, in order of appearance, were Bryan mayor pro tem James Edge, College Station councilman Mark Smith, B/CS Salvation Army board chairman Stephen Vincent, College Station mayor John Nichols, Blue Baker president Zach Langenkamp, Bryan Broadcasting’s Allison Harrell, Aggie Salvation Army philanthropy committee chairman Austin Moses, and Texas A&M junior Charlie Borowczak, who has participated in Angel Tree campaigns in multiple communities since he was six years old. Following a ceremonial ribbon cutting, the program concluded with music from Tetrachord that ended with a sing-a-long with those in the audience.
