Hearing the suspect’s voice helped two victims of an armed robbery show Bryan police where to make the arrest.
Officer Jon Agnew says this was Monday night in the parking lot and courtyard of an apartment complex along Lake Street between Cavitt and South Texas.
The victims told investigators they were held up at gunpoint by a man wearing a ski mask. After investigators arrived, the victims found someone in the courtyard who sounded like the suspect.
According to the arrest report, the suspect said he saw someone wearing a ski mask running out of the complex. An officer searching the suspect felt a pistol. In attempting to remove the handgun the officer stated the suspect tied to bring his arm and hand towards the weapon. The officer then drew his pistol and placed the muzzle in the defendant’s back and advised him in a loud and clear voice if he attempted to grab the pistol in his waist band he would be shot. Officers removed the suspect’s handgun, which was fully loaded with a round in the chamber and the hammer fully cocked to fire.
33 year old James Chaffin, who lives in the apartment complex where the arrest took place, is accused of taking cash and credit cards from two other residents.
According to jail records, this was Chaffin’s 14th arrest in the last 15 years.
