The Bryan Animal Center just finished its first full fiscal year in operation, and Head Deputy City Manager for Support Services Hugh Walker says December was unbelievably successful.
He says the adoption rate was higher than the euthanasia rate, which is a bit unusual for an animal shelter, with adoptions at 36% and euthanasia at 29%.
He says if they can do that in December, they ought to be able to do that every month.
Walker feels that having two shelters has been great for the entire community, and he believes the Aggieland Humane Society has also done well with adoptions.
He says the adoption rate, combined with staff’s efficiency and care, has brought prices down by about thirty dollars per animal.
Walker says there are several ways to become a more responsible pet owner, including tagging and micro-chipping, but the shelter also aims to help owners find and recover stray pets.
He says if you lose your pet in Bryan, make the Animal Center your first call, but also check with the Aggieland Humane Society.
Walker says for the last six months, animal control officers have made a real effort to get animals back to their homes instead of bringing them into the shelter.
