Bridgeport Officer Killed in Line of Duty

BRIDGEPORT, Texas (AP) _ A Bridgeport police sergeant died Thursday when his patrol car was struck by a fleeing vehicle.

City of Bridgeport spokeswoman Amber Fogelman says Sgt. Randy White, 32, died at the scene when the suspect’s vehicle rammed the rear of the patrol car.

Bridgeport Police Chief Randy Singleton said it appeared from the preliminary investigation that the driver “intentionally rammed into the officer at a high rate of speed.”

The suspect, identified by authorities as 44-year-old Stephen York of Bridgeport, was airlifted to a John Peter Smith hospital in nearby Fort Worth and was in the custody of Texas Rangers. His condition is unavailable tonight.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office says he’s charged with capital murder and is being held on $1 million bond.

It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Bridgeport Mayor Donald Majka told Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT that this is the first time they’ve lost an active duty officer in the city.

Bridgeport is about 45 miles northwest of Fort Worth
