The Brazos Valley Food Bank launched a $2.5 million dollar capital campaign Thursday.

The goal of the campaign, titled “Because Hunger Won’t Wait”, is to more than triple the food bank’s storage of dry products and increase the space of holding fresh and frozen food by more than five times.

Executive Director Theresa Mangapora says when the food bank moved into its current location in 2000, 1.5 million pounds of food was distributed.  In 2011, the food bank sent out just under four million pounds through the same warehouse.

The President of the Food Bank board, Mike McBerty, explained the expansion will accomplish six goals: (1) distribution of more food, (2) more cold space to capture the freshest food available, (3) designated more volunteer space to maximize output, (4) grow the capacity of their partner agencies, (5) provide confidential space for those who do not know where else to turn, and (6) enable the receipt of multiple donations at the same time.

The Kroger store at Rock Prairie and Longmire in College Station was the setting of Thursday’s kickoff. Store Manager Wayne Tomlinson presented the Food Bank a check for $100,000 and called on individuals to make contributions of all amounts.

Also speaking were Bryan ISD Superintendent Tommy Wallis and Southwood Elementary School Principal Kristiana Hamilton.  Both provided an update on the Food Bank’s backpack meal program used by elementary students in the Bryan and College Station school districts.

H-E-B stores also announced a $100,000 contribution to the campaign.

The food bank serves Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Madison, Robertson, and Washington counties.
