Brazos Valley Food Bank and “Super Agencies” Answer Call for Help

The partial government shutdown is affecting furloughed federal employees in the Brazos Valley. Employees are continuing to work without getting paid, and for some, money is tight.

The Brazos Valley Food Bank and “Super Agencies” in Brazos, Madison, Robertson and Burleson county are answering the call for help.

Theresa Mangapora, the food bank’s Executive Director, said they are stocking each super agency with emergency food boxes specifically meant for furloughed federal workers.

“They are doing their normal mission work and they’re taking this on as well with the understanding that they are going to get emergency food boxes directly from the food bank and that they may be taking calls at different times and that they are going to respond to those calls when they come in just to make it a little bit easier for these folks that might be going to work without a paycheck, but are still worried about food,” said Mangapora.

Mangapora said one federal agency reached out directly to the food bank for help because they had so many employees in need. On Friday, the food bank is delivering 140 emergency food boxes to the Women’s Federal Prison Camp in Bryan and will continue to do deliver boxes each week until the government shutdown ends.

Mangapora said you can help by donating food to the Brazos Valley Food Bank or volunteering for a shift to help pack the emergency food boxes.
