A Brazos County jail inmate who was booked Tuesday afternoon (April 2) died six and a half hours later.
A news release from the sheriff’s office says the 61 year old man ingested an unknown substance.
Independent investigations are being conducted by the sheriff’s office and the Texas Rangers.
When the investigation is completed, a custodial death report will be forwarded to the Texas attorney general’s office.
And the Texas jail commission has been notified of what is the third inmate death since last November.
News release from the Brazos County sheriff’s office:
On April 2nd, 2024, at approximately 5:00 pm a 61-year-old male was arrested by the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office on multiple warrants. He was booked into the Brazos County Detention Center at approximately 05:10 pm. At approximately 11:00 pm the 61-year-old male experienced a Medical Emergency at Brazos County Detention Center. The individual was transported by EMS to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan, Texas. The individual passed away in the hospital at 11:47 pm. Texas Rangers and Justice of the Peace were notified, and an autopsy is pending.
Our condolences are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time. A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this passing is underway. Initial findings indicate he ingested an unknown substance. The Texas Rangers will be conducting an independent investigation, as is standard for all in-custody deaths.
The Texas Jail Commission has also been notified as required. A Custodial Death Report will be forwarded to the Texas Attorney General upon completion of the investigation.
