The Brazos County extension office has been fielding calls from residents asking what they can do to protect their plants during the upcoming sub-freezing temperatures.

Extension horticulturist Skip Richter says to not worry about most of what he describes as dependably hearty plants.

But fruit trees that are already blooming may be lost, “unless you can do some pretty heroic things, way beyond (placing) an incandescent light bulb”.

Protective measures include mulching and placing covers over the base of the plant.

With container plants, Richter suggests putting them on a dolly and roll them into the garage.

Richter says you have through the weekend to protect plants, before temperatures are forecasted to be in the single digits.

He also says to disconnect hoses from outdoor water faucets.
