Brazos County Commissioners Switch From Cell Phone Allowances To Cell Phones

Brazos County employees are no longer receiving money towards their work related cell phones.

Instead, county employees are receiving cell phones.

And that has resulted in a difference of opinion between county commissioners and the sheriff.

As of August 24, the county’s cell phone allowance went away for everyone except elected officials. Elected officials lose the benefit October 1.

County judge Duane Peters says county phones will be issued in order to comply with a new state law requiring all calls and texts to be archived.

When Peters said the commission is negotiating with Verizon to do the archiving, sheriff Chris Kirk said that’s not possible for law enforcement who use AT&T phones connected with the first in the nation FirstNet communications network.

Irma Cauley, who supports Verizon’s proposal, was not swayed by the sheriff.

Kirk also disagreed with the county purchasing director’s statement that Verizon is doing something similar to AT&T.
