Brazos County Commissioners Reject Appraisal District Building Request

Brazos County Commissioners on Tuesday turned down a request from the Brazos Central Appraisal District (BCAD) for a new office building.

BCAD has been leasing 10,500 square feet and wants to build a 14,000 square foot building near the intersection of University and Copperfield.

BCAD officials say the additional 3,500 square feet will provide more room for hearing appeals and training employees.

County Judge Duane Peters and Commissioner Sammy Catalena repeated what they said last week that the appraisal district could do with less space, which would reduce the project cost.

The landlord of the appraisal district’s current location, Don Ball, says there’s been no rent increase in the last ten years and the property owner is willing to consider leasing additional space.

Commissioners Lloyd Wasserman and Kenny Mallard also voted against the BCAD request, which was approved last month by the College Station school board.

Approval must be given by the Bryan and College Station city councils and the Bryan school board in order for the BCAD project to proceed.
