Brazos County Commission Approves Closing Railroad Crossings

Union Pacific railroad’s request to close two crossings south of Wellborn has been approved by Brazos County Commissioners.

Commissioners saw few in the audience and none spoke before the unanimous vote.

County Judge Duane Peters repeated if the crossings at Wade and Straub aren’t closed, UP won’t build a new crossing at Greens Prairie Trail, which would back up vehicular traffic at crossings on South Dowling, Rock Prairie, and possibly locations farther north.

Lloyd Wasserman, who represents the district where this is taking place, said residents were worried the county was closing roads. Wasserman emphasized Straub and Wade Roads will remain open and it’s only the crossings that will be closed.

The next step for the county is acquiring the right of way to extend Greens Prairie Trail from Wellborn to IGN Road. After the new crossing opens, then UP can close the other locations.

The railroad has not announced when construction will begin on a siderail affecting that area, prompting the closings.
