Brazos County Commission 3-2 Vote Lifting Notification Requirements Before Applying Herbicides In Some Areas South Of College Station

Action during Tuesday’s Brazos County commission meeting included a 3-2 vote to remove requirements to notify the Texas Department of Agriculture before two herbicides can be used on land south of College Station.

Dr. Don Renchie of Texas A&M’s agricultural and environmental safety unit says the state notification before applying the chemicals 2-4-D and Dicamba can be dropped because the land is no longer used to grow crops.

Renchie said residential developments being removed from the reporting requirement include Meadow Creek and River Run.

Local grape producer Paul Bonnarigo says those chemicals can still drift across the Brazos River and affect Texas A&M research farms located in Burleson County.

Commissioners Russ Ford and Steve Aldrich were defeated in their attempt to delay action until they could learn more. Voting to lift the reporting requirement were county judge Duane Peters and commissioners Nancy Berry and Irma Cauley.
