Brazos County Bar Asks County Commissioners To Support State Legislation For A Fourth District Court

State legislation to add a fourth district court in Brazos County has the support of local lawyers.

Two board members of the Brazos County bar association asked county commissioners for their endorsement of House Bill 1134.

President Matt Doss says three-fourths of more than 50 lawyers responding to a survey says it’s needed.

David Hilburn brought up the increase of local law enforcement since the last district court was established in the mid-1980’s.

The survey also indicated almost two-thirds of lawyers who responded support another county court at law.

County judge Duane Peters, who was not at Tuesday’s meeting, has previously said there are enough courts.

The four commissioners at the meeting did not respond, since state law does not allow elected officials to respond to items not on the agenda.
