The Brazos Animal Shelter is more than doubling the money it’s receiving from local governments.
The Bryan City Council Tuesday night approved giving the shelter $299,185 for the new business year that starts Friday. That’s more than twice the $145,671 given to the shelter the prior fiscal year.
College Station’s payment to the shelter rose from $71,214 to $169,572. And the amount from Brazos County is going from $40,000 to $67,423.
The combined total the shelter will receive from the three government goes from $256,885 in fiscal year 2010 to $536,120 in FY 11.
The shelter pays no rent for its operation which is on land owned by the City of Bryan. And the shelter keeps impoundment fees that at least one Bryan council member thinks should be going to the city.
Deputy City Manager Hugh Walker told the council that staff will have options for sheltering unwanted animals next year with plenty of time to spare.
While the Bryan council’s vote was unanimous, Councilman Paul Madison questioned why the shelter more than doubled its price for each animal it receives.

The contract with the City of Bryan includes a termination clause with 90 days notice by either side and the council can change the rent-free agreement the shelter has on city owned property with 60 days notice.
