Bratton Nabs 200 Back Win at World University of Games

Gwangju City, South Korea — Texas A&M freshman Lisa Bratton grabbed first place in the women’s 200-meter backstroke at the World University Games on Sunday at the Nambu University International Aquatics Center.

Bratton, from Richland, Wash., trailed most of the race, but turned in a blistering 32.20 on her final 50 meters to win by a second and a half in a lifetime best 2:09.31. Bratton, who is A&M’s record holder in short course yards and long course meters, covered the final 50 a full second faster than anyone else in the field. Rounding out the medalists were Simona Baumrtova of the Czech Republic and Yuka Kawayoke of Japan.

Other Aggies in action on Sunday were sophomores Franko Jonker (Pretoria, South Africa) and Sycerika McMahon (Belfast, Northern Ireland), who both advanced to the semifinals of the 100-meter breaststroke. Jonker was fifth in her preliminary heat in 1:09.01 and sixth in her semifinal race in 1:09.03, while McMahon was fourth in her prelim in 1:09.45 and eighth in semis in 1:10.59.
