Bombers Win 13-8 over Strykers, Clinch Playoff Berth

Bryan-College Station, TX (July 1, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers (21-6) won 13-8 over the Woodlands Strykers (10-19) Tuesday night, clinching first place in the first half of the TCL season as well as ensuring a home playoff berth.

“We had a lot to play for knowing that [a playoff berth was on the line,]” said Curtis Dixon, Bombers head coach. “We just had to win—we didn’t need Victoria to lose when we could just settle it on the field here tonight and get it done. It’s good to know that August 9th we’ll be playing here at Cellucor Field in front of our home fans.”

The Bombers’ offense started fast out of the gate, putting up seven runs in the first two innings. The Strykers plated two in the top of third to cut the deficit to 7-2, but the Bombers offense would prove too potent, adding five more runs by the end of the sixth inning to lead 12-2.

The Woodlands attempted to come back late in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth to make the score 12-4. Woodlands catcher Kevin Santana would hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth to double the Strykers run total, but it would prove too little too late as the Bombers cruised to their fourth straight victory.

With the win, the Bombers secured the No. 1 seed in the TCL playoffs and won their fourth consecutive half-season.

“It’s exciting—it’s a fun thing to be a part of,” said designated hitter Grady Caldwell, who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the Bombers’ victory. “We know we’re going to the playoffs, we know we’re the first team, so we’re just going to try to keep it going. The crowd here’s always fun to play in front of—there’s a good atmosphere here and it’s definitely an advantage for us.”

The Bombers will finish their series against the Strykers Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Cellucor Field. Wednesday is the Bombers’ “Salute the Troops” night in addition to Weenie Wednesday, with dollar hotdogs presented by FedStar Credit Union.
