Bryan-College Station, TX (June 19, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers (14-5) won the first leg of their four game home stand Thursday night, blowing out the Woodlands Strykers (6-12) 17-6 thanks to a 19 hit outburst from the Bombers’ offense.
“It’s good getting all the guys here—Logan Nottebrok, Hunter Hagler, Robbie Rojas from Oklahoma State—and guys are hitting the ball well,” said Curtis Dixon, Bombers head coach.
All but two of the Bombers’ starters had two or more hits in the game. Designated hitter Logan Nottebrok was named the Bombers player of the game after going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs in the game.
“I felt great,” Nottebrok said. “Coming off of my first game, I did pretty well. Getting the first one out of the way—well that’s the best one to get out of the way. Doing good tonight, that’s only icing on the cake.”
While collegiate players usually take time to adjust to using wooden bats in summer ball, Nottebrok has shown no signs of trouble in making the switch from aluminum. The Aggie has gone 7-for-9 in his first two games with the Bombers, and credits using a wooden bat during practice at Texas A&M for his early success.
“The whole year at A&M, they make you hit with a wood bat,” Nottebrok said. “When you get a metal bat in your hand, it makes it a little bit easier for you to hit the ball as hard as you can.”
The Bombers have started the season off hot and look to finish in first place at the All-Star break—clinching an automatic playoff berth. Dixon feels the team is on the right path to accomplish its goal of winning the first half.
“You’ve got to play the game the right way, play hard every night, and care about the team—care about each other,” Dixon said. “If you do that every night like these guys do, I love our chances to go win the top spot in the first half.”
The Bombers will face the Strykers Friday night at 7:05 p.m., with a postgame fireworks extravaganza presented by College Station Hilton.
