Blinn College FY 16 Budget Includes Property Tax Increase in Washington County

Blinn College trustees have finalized where the money is coming from for the new budget year that began September first.

This week’s trustees meeting included a unanimous vote to raise property taxes in Washington County to support the home campus in Brenham.

The only comments came from a newly elected member of the board, Stacy Ashchenbeck. She said the Brenham campus would not survive without the property tax increase, which amounts to $4.00 dollars for the owner of a $100,000 dollar home in Washington County.

Blinn still has the lowest property tax rate among community colleges in the state.

Blinn also raised its rates for tuition, fees, and housing; and the college is getting more state funding.

Blinn’s trustees adopted its budget last month, which does not break down revenue and expenses by campus. That follows the discovery by state representative John Raney of Bryan that some revenue generated in Brazos County was going to Brenham.
