Blinn College Developments Include Trustee Appointments From Brazos County & Interim Legislative Study

Two familiar names from the College Station and Bryan city councils have been nominated to serve on the Blinn College board of trustees. A new state law expanded the Blinn board for the next four years with two members from Blinn’s Brazos County advisory committee who are appointed by the county commission. County judge Duane Peters placed on Tuesday’s agenda College Station mayor Nancy Berry and former Bryan councilwoman Ann Horton. Both would serve two year terms. As Brazos County trustees, they will not be allowed to vote on Blinn’s Washington County property tax rate and can not be named an officer. With the appointments of Berry and Horton to the trustees, the 11 member advisory board will be short seven people at the end of the year. That’s due to two existing vacancies and three other members whose terms are expiring. Unless the legislature changes the new state law, Brazos County representation on Blinn’s board of trustees will expire in four years.

Debate during this year’s legislative session about funding and operating 50 state-supported community colleges will continue with a study by the Texas House. Representative John Raney of Bryan asked for the interim study after determining funding inequity he found between Blinn College campuses in Bryan and Brenham is happening statewide. Raney says this a follup to legislation he filed last session…in part on how community colleges distribute state funds. Raney says he doesn’t think anybody in state government knows where money going to community colleges is being spent.
