Blair, Andaya to be inducted into Texas Sports Hall of Fame

WACO, TEXAS – The Texas Sports Hall of Fame (TSHOF) Induction Committee chaired by Texas Football Magazine founder Dave Campbell, has announced its Class of 2011, presented by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, and Texas A&M women’s basketball head coach Gary Blair is one of the newest members.

A Dallas, Texas, native, Blair led the Aggie women to their first national championship in program history in 2011. He closed out the season with a school-record 33 wins and a program-best No. 1 national ranking. Blair also produced A&M’s first All-American in Danielle Adams.

“I grew up a fan of sports and now to be honored among the greats in the state of Texas in every sport is the highest honor any coach or player could possibly have,” said Blair. “I chose women’s basketball and women’s basketball chose me and it’s an honor beyond my wildest dreams that something like this could happen to an old, broken-down baseball player like me.

“I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to all the people that have helped me get to this level, all the players I’ve coached, and all the fans along the way that have helped make me feel appreciated every place I’ve coached.”

Blair, a 1963 graduate of Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, attended Texas Tech and played baseball for the Red Raiders as well as earning undergraduate and master’s degrees from Texas Tech. He was the architect of three state championships and a 239-18 record at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, before taking over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack program and making it a national contender.

On the collegiate level, Blair is a two-time national finalist for Coach of the Year honors. He is one of the all-time winningest coaches in NCAA women’s basketball history and is one of only three all-time NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches to lead two different teams to the NCAA Women’s Final Four (Texas A&M and Arkansas).

Blair has been named to the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Southland Conference Hall of Honor in 2009.

At Texas A&M, he took over a women’s basketball program that was at the basement and has elevated it into one of the nation’s elite programs, winning a national championship, a Big 12 regular-season and two tournament titles as well as leading the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament for six straight seasons.

Blair becomes just the fourth Big 12 women’s basketball coach all-time to be inducted by the TSHOF next to Jody Conradt, Kim Mulkey and Marsha Sharp.

A&M’s Shawn Andaya was also a TSHOF Class of 2011 Inductee. Andaya was a three-time All-American pitcher for the Aggies from 1984-87 and is also a member of the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame.

“I’m also honored to be inducted with a fellow Aggie (Shawn Andaya), who I just happened to see two weeks ago,” added Blair. “It says a lot about the importance of women’s sports today, not only at Texas A&M, but across the nation.”

Blair and Andaya become the 24th and 25th TSHOF Inductees from Texas A&M.

The TSHOF Class of 2011 banquet will be held in February 2012. The exact date, time and ticket prices will be announced at a later date. Check www.tshof.org for updates. Others being inducted into the Class of 2011 are Mack Brown, Fred Couples, G.A. Moore, Jr., Dave Parks, Tobin Rote, Bubba Smith, Lovie Smith and Andre Ware.
