Bertolet Matches SEC Record, Earns SEC Weekly Honors

Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas A&M senior placekicker Taylor Bertoletearned Southeastern Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Monday after matching the conference record with six field goals in the Aggies’ road victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Bertolet, from Reading, Pa., connected on three three-pointers in each half against the Commodores as he accounted for 18 points in the Aggies’ 25-0 shutout victory. Three of his field goals came from beyond 40 yards as he nailed three-pointers from 31, 25, 46, 46, 41 and 23 yards.

Bertolet’s career-best game, which fell just one FG shy of the NCAA record, matched the SEC record of six FGs in a game originally set by Auburn’s Al Del Greco in 1982 and matched by Florida’s Bobby Raymond (twice) in 1983 and 1984, Alabama’s Philip Doyle in 1990, Georgia’s Billy Bennett in 2001 and Ole Miss’ Jonathan Nichols in 2003.

He also equaled the school record originally set by bare-footed PK Alan Smith, who set the Southwest Conference and the then-NCAA record (tie) of six against Arkansas State in 1983. Smith was accurate from 44, 45, 42, 33, 59 and 57 with the record-tying 57-yarder coming with just seven seconds left in the game.

After Saturday’s big game, Bertolet moved into a tie for the national lead for field goals made (22) and field goals attempted (29). He became the third Aggie placekicker to reach the 20-FG plateau in a season and his 22 FGs rank No. 2 behind Randy Bullock’s 29 field goals from his All-America and Lou Groza Award-winning season in 2011. Bertolet remains the FBS leader with five 50-yard field goals in 2015.
