COLLEGE STATION, Texas – (October 12, 2016) Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – College Station has been designated a Level III trauma center by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
“A successful trauma center verification survey and designation is a display of our commitment to the community, showing that we provide quality care for people in their time of need,” said Jason Jennings, Baylor Scott & White – College Station president. “This designation shows that this hospital meets a high standard, and it is a testament to the team that works to maintain the standard every day.”
Baylor Scott & White – College Station joins 56 other designated Level III trauma centers across Texas. Trauma center levels are determined by resources available to the facility and the number of patients admitted annually. Level III trauma centers provide resuscitation, stabilization, and assessment of injury victims; provide treatment or arrange for appropriate transfer to a higher level designated trauma facility; provide ongoing educational opportunities in trauma related topics for health care professionals and the public; and implement targeted injury prevention programs.
The emergency department at Baylor Scott & White – College Station recorded nearly 47,000 patient visits over the past two years, with about 17 percent of those patients arriving for treatment of a traumatic injury.
“Designation as a Level III trauma center is important because it acknowledges and affirms our ability to care for the severely injured patient,” said Matt Jordan, MD, trauma medical director at Baylor Scott & White – College Station. “It shows we provide a ready team to respond to extremely serious situations with quality care.”
The three-year-old hospital was reviewed in June by a Texas EMS Trauma and Acute Care Foundation (TETAF) survey team. The TETAF does not designate trauma centers, but provides the survey findings. The Texas Department of State Health Services designates trauma facilities based on the survey results.
