Local dignitaries and elected officials were on hand Monday as the Barron Road underpass at Texas 6 opened in College Station.
The opening is the culmination of the $2.4 million project begun in Spring 2009. The project was made possible through federal stimulus funds.
U.S. Representative Chet Edwards (D-Waco) helped secure the stimulus funds, ensuring the shovel-ready project was begun in 2009.
“This was a great partnership, and I salute the city of College Station, the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce, the Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization and TxDOT for working together to make this highway improvement happen,” Edward said in a written release. “What makes this so important is that easing traffic congestion makes our roads safer and means families can spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home with their children and loved ones. That’s why I am grateful to have been part of this great community effort.”
College Station Police remind north and southbound Rudder Freeway feeder road traffic that the opening of the Barron Road underpass brings with it new stop signs at the intersection. Drivers are strongly encouraged to pay close attention when driving through the area.
