KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) _ Former President George H.W. Bush is a former CIA director who knows how to keep a secret. That helped him pull a fast one on his wife, Barbara.

The 86-year-old former first lady was surprised Thursday by the dedication of a garden in her honor on the village green in the Maine town of Kennebunkport. They have a summer home there.

The former president was already there when Barbara Bush arrived to find about 100 people under a white tent. Spokesman Jim Appleby says they had concocted a ruse about a ceremony at their office to get her dressed up but clueless to the real event.

The garden features flowers and one tree each in reference to their 17 grandchildren.
