Austin Man Faces Death Penalty in Police Officer Murder

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ An Austin man could face the death penalty after a Travis County grand jury issued a capital murder indictment in the April shooting of a police officer.

Brandon Daniel was indicted Wednesday in the April 6 shooting death of Austin police Senior Officer Jaime Padron and faces the death penalty or life in prison if convicted.

A spokesman for Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg said there’s been no decision whether to seek the death penalty.

Padron, 40, was killed inside a north Austin Walmart after responding to a call around 2:30 a.m. about a man causing a disturbance.

Daniel, 24, remains in jail pending trial. His attorney, Bill White, did not immediately respond to a telephone message seeking comment.
