An anonomyous call to 911 dispatchers offered the suspects nickname and address. Investigators found the hood and front fender of the pickup that struck Camarillo in a storage building owned by Tates’ grandmother. The grandmother told police Tates told her he hit a deer.
Tates later told detectives he saw the bicyclist coming from the driver’s side of the pickup. After slamming his brakes and putting the truck in neutral the collision occurred, causing Camarillo to roll over the corner of the hood and falling to the ground. Tates added he doesn’t think he ran over the victim. Tates said he panicked and fled the scene without giving any aid because he did not have good insurance. He is jailed in lieu of 250 thousand dollars bond.
