April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

Cary Baker, Executive Director at Scotty’s House, says they served 1,189 children in 2023.

“Statistics show that 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. So you may not be personally impact, but I guarantee someone you know has been. It’s just not something people disclose,” says Baker.

Baker says when child abuse happens and goes untreated, there is a ripple affect in the community.

“We see higher rates of drug and alcohol use, we see higher rates of incarceration, we see higher rates of kids dropping out of school. The effects are significant in the community,” says Baker.

You can drive by Prosperity Bank on Texas Avenue to view the Pinwheel Garden representing the children served by Scotty’s House and Voices for Children in 2023.

An Awareness Ceremony will also be held on April 2nd at 12 p.m. at the Brazos County Administration Building.
