A&M’s Matthews, Garrett Named Preseason All-Americans

A pair of Texas A&M football standouts received preseason All-America mention from CFBMatrix.com. The Aggies, who were ranked No. 15 in the publication, open the 2015 season against Arizona State in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sept. 5.

Senior offensive center Mike Matthews, who was also recently named to the Rimington Trophy watch list, was named first-team All-American, while sophomore defensive end Myles Garrett earned fourth-team mention from the publication, which puts emphasis on 2014 production and 2015 potential.

Matthews, from Missouri City, Texas, will be entering his third season as the Aggies’ starter at center and has 23 career starts to his credit. With Matthews helping clear the way the past two seasons, the Aggies have generated two of top five offensive outputs in school history – 6,999 yards in 2013 and 5,920 in 2014. The Aggies led the SEC in rushing, passing, scoring and total offense in 2013 and led the conference in passing and passing touchdowns in 2014.

Garrett, from Arlington, Texas, is coming off a Freshman All-America season that saw him lead the team in quarterback sacks, tackles for loss and QB hurries. Garrett’s 11.5 sacks broke the SEC freshman record of eight set by Jadeveon Clowney in 2011. In addition to his 11.5 sacks, Garrett finished his first season in the maroon and white with 53 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 10 QB hurries.
