A&M’s Humphreys, Vaughan Each Earn National Athlete of the Week honors

NEW ORLEANS – A pair of Aggie throwers were recognized as National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as Texas A&M senior Sam Humphreys and freshman Shelbi Vaughan established early outdoor season leading marks in the men’s javelin and women’s discus.

Humphreys moved to No. 10 on the all-time collegiate list, and sixth among American collegians, with a winning mark of 267-1 (81.40) that bettered his meet record of 256-6 (78.19) set last season at Arizona State’s Baldy Castillo Invitational. Humphreys also nearly matched his Aggie school record mark of 268-7 (81.86) that won the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer.

Currently ranked seventh on the 2013 world list, Humphreys is the U.S. and collegiate leader following his opening week of the season. The next best American and collegiate javelin mark so far this season is 247-3 (75.36).

Vaughan, also a member of the Aggie volleyball team, broke a 10-year-old Texas A&M school record in the discus on her initial attempt and bettered the previous mark with each of her six throws at the Castillo Invitational. Her series included marks of 185-0, 177-1, 182-6, 185-0, 183-3, and 181-10.

Finishing as the top collegian in the meet, and second overall, Vaughan currently is the U.S. and collegiate leader with a mark of 185-0 (56.40). The next best American mark is a 178-7 (54.44) and the second best collegiate mark is 176-4 (53.76).

The opening weekend of the outdoor season for the Aggie track and field team produced a total of seven U.S. and eight collegiate leaders. In addition A&M currently has 17 SEC leaders.
