AMARILLO, Texas (AP) _ Toxicology results show an Amarillo gunman was legally drunk when he fatally shot an Oklahoma woman before a Potter County deputy killed him.
Lt. Gary Trupe says two blood alcohol level tests were done on 58-year-old Gary Don Carner. Results came back 0.17 and 0.24. The legal limit for driving is 0.08. Carner also had a prescription painkiller and an antidepressant in his system.
Trupe says Carner on Aug. 3 tried to abduct a 31-year-old woman. Carner then fatally shot 63-year-old Sharrel Blankenbaker of Felt, Okla., who stopped Carner from taking her 12-year-old granddaughter.
Carner then abducted 11-year-old girl before he was shot by a deputy.
Trupe says investigators may never know what sparked the abduction spree after Carner, who had no criminal history, spent several hours drinking at a bar.
