News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
EUGENE – The Texas A&M track & field team concludes its 2024 campaign at the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 5-8 at Hayward Field.
A&M booked 26 tickets to nationals at the NCAA West First Round two weeks ago, with 15 coming on the women’s side and 11 on the men’s. The women have 13 individual performers at the championships and qualified both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays to the meet. The men will compete in 10 individual events and the 4x400m relay.
The Aggies enter the championships boasting a pair of top-10 national ranks, as the men hold fifth and the women sixth. On the men’s side the Maroon & White have six athletes seeded in point-scoring positions and one national leader in Sam Whitmarsh (800m), while the women have five including a pair that pace the country in Lamara Distin (high jump) and Timara Chapman (heptathlon).
Seven of A&M’s medal winners from the SEC Outdoor Championships ensured qualification to the national meet, as title winners Whitmarsh (800m), Chapman (heptathlon), Lianna Davidson (javelin), Victor Kibiego (3k steeplechase) and Heather Abadie all punched their tickets at the regional meet in Arkansas. Other medalists including Ja’Qualon Scott (110m hurdles) and Distin (high jump) also booked their spots out of the west.
The Maroon & White have won eight of their nine National Championships outdoors during the Pat Henry era, with an even split of four titles each on the men’s and women’s sides. At last year’s nationals, A&M athletes garnered 31 All-America honors, with 17 coming on the women’s side and 14 on the men’s.
