A&M System Regents to Consider More New Construction

Texas A&M University and the University of Texas may never see each other in athletics again, but cooperation continues off the field. This week’s A&M System Board of Regents agenda includes a joint construction project. On A&M’s Riverside campus, also known as the former air base, are plans for a $7 million dollar library storage building. Construction is projected to start next month with completion the following March. The 18,000 square foot structure is supposed to hold one million books. It is not designed to keep anything rare or expensive. The intent is to move books kept for research purposes and are infrequently used, freeing space at libraries on-campus. Over time, what is moved to the storage building will be replaced by digital copies of library materials.

Also on the agenda is an additional $6 million dollars of new construction affecting the Corps of Cadets. That includes stripping the now-vacant Leonard Hall down to its basic structure and demolish the adjacent study lounge. New construction includes 110 dorm rooms and a four-floor leadership learning center in the southeast corner of the quad. That increases to $15.2 million dollars, the total budget for upgraded Cadets facilities on the flagship campus. The construction schedule has not been set.
