A&M Starts New Academic Year Leaner

A leaner Texas A&M University is underway with a new academic year.

Provost Karan Watson says they’re ready to educate around 50,000 students after the Legislature reduced funding by $39 million dollars.

While taking the worst financial hit expected from the Legislature, Watson says there was an internal reallocation of $21 million in non-state funds.

Dr. Watson talks $6 million being spent on ” high-impact educational practices and experiences”.

Watson says $2 million in non-state funds will be spent on doing a better job of advising students so they can graduate in four years.

Dr. Watson comments on taking less time for students to graduate.

Another $700,000 will be spent in part on teaching teachers.

Dr. Watson explains “Create a campus culture that values and supports the contributions of a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to the educational mission of Texas A&M and makes us the employer of choice.”

A&M also reallocated over $10 million in facility maintenance and related items.
