FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore Kyle Allen was named one of the Davey O’Brien Award’s weekly “Great 8” honorees after helping the Aggies to a 30-17 win over then-No. 21 Mississippi State.
Allen, from Scottsdale, Ariz., threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions on 25-of-41 passing as the Aggies moved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference. Allen also chipped in a career-high 65 rushing yards on 12 carries. Allen’s touchdown passes came via a one-yard connection with sophomore Ricky Seals-Jones on a fourth-down play and with sophomoreDamion Ratley on a 29-yard catch-and-run.
Allen is the SEC leader in passing efficiency with a 169.0 rating (No. 9 in FBS) and passing touchdowns with 13 (tied for No. 9). Allen has passed for 1,274 yards (254.8 per game) on 89-of-139 passing.

Davey O’Brien Award announces “Great 8” Performances
FORT WORTH, Texas –The Davey O’Brien Award has announced its “Great 8” quarterback performances for week five of the college football season. The eight honorees include: Kyle Allen of Texas A&M, Arizona State’s Mike Bercovici, Trevone Boykin of TCU, Western Kentucky’s Brandon Doughty, Blake Frohnapfel of UMass, Florida’s Will Grier, Seth Russell of Baylor and Houston’s Greg Ward Jr.
All 128 FBS quarterbacks are eligible for the weekly honor, which is determined by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee.
In 1938, Davey O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.
O’Brien was drafted fourth overall in the 1939 NFL Draft and earned Pro Bowl honors in his rookie season after setting an National Football League record for season passing yardage. The NFL’s highest-paid player retired after the 1940 season to become an FBI agent.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Since 1977, the Foundation has given away more than $900,000 in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

* Completed 25 of 41 passes for 322 yards and a pair of scores and added 65 rushing yards in a 30-17 win over No. 21 Mississippi State.
Mike Bercovici (Arizona State, Sr., 6-2, 210, Calabasas, Calif.)
* Successful on 27 of 44 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 37 yards and a score in a 38-23 upset win over No. 7 UCLA.
Trevone Boykin (TCU, Sr., 6-2, 205, Dallas, Texas)
* Was 20-for-35 for 332 yards and five touchdowns and added 52 yards rushing in just three quarters in a 50-7 rout of Texas.
Brandon Doughty (Western Kentucky, Sr., 6-3, 220, Davie, Fla.)
* Fired four scoring strikes and topped the 400-yard passing mark (28 of 39, 409 yards) in a 49-10 victory over Rice.
Blake Frohnapfel (UMass, Sr., 6-6, 238, Stafford, Va.)
* Was 32-for-42 for 363 yards and three touchdowns in a 24-14 win over Florida International, the team’s first nonconference win as an FBS program.
Will Grier (Florida, Fr., 6-2, 201, Davidson, N.C.)
* Connected on four touchdown passes and had just five incompletions (24 of 29, 271 yards) in a 38-10 triumph over No. 3 Ole Miss.
Seth Russell (Baylor, Jr., 6-3, 220, Garland, Texas)
* Totaled six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) and was 15-for-23 for 286 yards to go along with 81 rush yards in a 63-35 win vs. Texas Tech.
Greg Ward Jr. (Houston, Jr., 5-11, 185, Tyler, Texas)
* Set a school record for rushing yards by a quarterback (182), ran for three touchdowns and threw for 273 yards in a 38-24 victory over Tulsa.
